Mentalist - Problem Family (feat. Loudmouth Melvin)

Mentalist and sparring partner Loudmouth Melvin go back and forth on Problem Family.

Be sure to keep your eyes out for Mentalist's album proper, Make You Proud, dropping at the end of next month.

Myke Forte - Zodiak: Leo (Beat Tape)

Easily one of the best producers in the country, Myke Forte is back with the latest in his Zodiak beat tape series. Anyone who wants to hear excellent hip hop instrumentals from a homegrown talent, look no further.

Rodney P Freestyle App Advert

First, I rarely see adverts that make me want to buy the products they're promoting, but this does just that.

Second, I forgot how cool Rodney P is.

UPDATE: Please do not buy this product, it does not sync properly. Shame on Rodders and Skitz for putting their names to it.

UPDATE: It seems this bug was specific to the iPhone 4 and a new version has now been released to rectify the problem.

M9 - Shot (Video)

If you don't like watching graphic depictions of people getting shot in their headtops, do not watch this video. Everyone else fill your boots.

Orion's Stencil coming real soon.

Roc Marciano, X.O., Tranqill & Apollo Brown - Helpless Dreamer

Our very own Tranqill joins Marci, X.O. and Apollo Brown on Helpless Dreamer, the title track off Mello Music Group's newly released compilation.

Catch The Beat - The Best Of Soul Underground 1987-1991 (Out Now)

In the halcyon days of yesteryear, before any old dullard with a laptop could start a blog, tenacious would-be journalists launched their own printed ventures to inform readers and satiate their love of music. One such rap fanzine was Soul Underground. Running for four years from 1987, the rag has now been compiled into an anthology for all true hip hop geeks to bumph up their coffee-table book collections.

You can get Catch The Beat - The Best Of Soul Underground 1987-1991 from here. Plus if you use the code OLDSCHOOL you'll get a £2 discount.

Here's a PDF sampler too.

The Electric - Beautiful feat. Yarah Bravo (Video)

Brit hip hop luminary DJ Vadim is the brains behind collective The Electric - made up of the man himself, Chicagoan Pugs Atomz and English lass Sabira Jade.

This is the lead single from next year's debut, Life Is Moving.

The Electric - Beautiful feat. Yarah Bravo

Evil Ed - It's a K.O., Razorblades Remix

Longtime beat architect Evil Ed is putting the finishing touches to his Edstrumentals Vol.2, in stores from 8th Dec. Before then, have a couple of free mp3s to get your headnod onto.

RicKo Capito - BBB Burial (78 Bars) (Video)

"...know I'm back, strapped - like an Amsterdam roll."

RicKo Capito
picks Lloyd Banks' Beamer, Benz or Bentley to talk slick on.

Dude has a mixtape entitled Headtop Seazon Vol 1: Point Blank and music with producer Jetsun 24/7 in the works.

Sway - Wow (Pow 2011 Refix)

Ever the opportunist, Sway jacks Lethal Bizzle's Pow 2011 and makes it his own.

Sway - Wow (Pow 2011 Refix)

It's worth checking the original, played on Westwood's show this week, to hear Wiley employ a new speech-impediment style (people will do anything to sound original) and Ghetts owning it.

It's crazy to think that the original Pow was released six years ago. Hip hop's grey hairs started showing many years ago; now it looks like grime's getting jowly with age. The 2004 take was, and is, one of the most popular songs of the bastard child of garage and hip hop. In fact, it attracted so much hype that it was banned from many radio stations and venues 'cause manaman got too rowdy in the dance.

Has anyone else noticed that EVERYONE is making sequels to their most respected work? That said, the advance copy I've got of Illmatic 2 (Illmatic-er) is ace.

Ruste Juxx - Adamantine, U A Bitch (Videos)

Brooklyn's Ruste Juxx continues the roll-out of his videos for Adamantine, the album he created with UK producer Endemic.

Yungun - One Step Together

Mr Thing jacked The Beatles for this effort, salvaged from the cutting-room floor.

What YG's sayin':

"I recorded this track a couple years ago for fun, as part of a remixes project that me and Mr Thing were working on. I chopped this up myself, added some claps and finger clicks then jumped in the booth.

For obvious reasons, this was never going to get a proper release! The verses ended up going on the Grown Man Business album that me and Mr Thing did.

Now seemed like as good a time as any to let people hear it. Enjoy!"

Be on the lookout for Thing and Essa's mixtape Jack The World.

Dr. Syntax - Standard Procedure, This Fresh

Synners is getting ready for his second outing on Benny Huge. Get your lugholes round Standard Procedure and This Fresh, though both are clean edits, so you'll have to wait until 13th of December when the album's released if you want the fucking naughty bits.

Dr. Syntax - Standard Procedure (prod. Pete Cannon)

Dr. Syntax - This Fresh feat. Manipulate

DJ Slademan - 1Xtra Guest Mix

DJ Slademan was one of many guests who got a mix picked up by Charlie Sloth for his show on 1Xtra. He was, however, only one of six deemed to be the best of the bunch. See what you're saying.

Melanin 9 - Black Widow feat. Blasphemy & Cyrus Malachi (Video)

Melanin 9 poaches Pete Rock's Strange Fruit for Black Widow, a track from the Orion Stencil mixtape that's arriving on the 30th.

Mr. Drastick - So Many Devils (prod. Jon Phonics) (Video)

Mr. Drastick gets his anthropology on with this video for So Many Devils - another banger from the venerable Jon Phonics.

Kashmere - Galaktus: Power Cosmic (Out Now)

Kashmere's Galaktus: Power Cosmic on Boot Records has finally landed. Check the video for Bang! Splat! to get a sample of Iguana Man's intergalactic lothario steez over Zygote & Jazz T's typically dusty production.

Disorda's got physical copies and you can pick up the binary version all over.

Dubbledge On Set Of EyeSeeYou Video Shoot

Dubbledge spits to camera on the set of EyeSeeYou, a collaboration with Metabeats that will be on the Associated Minds producer's sophomore album.

Asaviour Interview

I always got the impression that Savvy's a nice guy. Turns out his production is nicer still, so watch out for the third and final installment of his mixtape series Play 2 Win, on which he'll be showing off what he can do on the boards.

Maverick Sabre - Travelling Man (Mixtape)

Precocious vocalist Maverick Sabre delivers his first mixtape with Travelling Man, featuring an updated version of the track Sometimes, this time with Wretch 32 offering his two pence.

This guy cites Bob Dylan and Klashnekoff as two of his major influences. Pretty flippin' cool.

TB Vs. Jon Phonics (Mixtape)

Beatsmith Jon Phonics just let loose this collection of some old and some brand new music produced by him and blessed by London MC T.Bear, aka TB, aka Tuberculosis.

TB Vs Jon Phonics

The Planets - Planet Roc feat. Scorzayzee & gENSu dEAn (prod. Roc Marciano)

The Planets have been away for a long time. Nearly ten years in fact. Their Circle Of Light, The Planets and High Off Life EPs made noise in 2000 and 2001, before they followed up with 2002's The Opening and 2003's The Epic. And then they were gone.

Now they're back with a new EP entitled Planet Roc, which, strangely, is produced by New York underground hero Roc Marciano. It seems like an odd pairing until you realise that Marci's stripped-down, break-led beats pretty much match the UK's sound.

Kings Of The City - Listen To The Old Man (Video)

Kings Of The City - what you'd get if you crossed hip hop and grime with blues, via rock - follow up I Try with their latest single, Listen To The Old Man.

Ruste Juxx - Rap Assassins feat. Ill Bill, Sav Killz & Cyrus Malachi (Video)

East London's Cyrus Malachi joins Ruste and co. on Rap Assassins, off the Endemic-produced Adamantine album. I would definitely avoid an altercation with anyone on this record.

Jon Phonics - Raw Ingredients feat. Cyrus Malachi & Jehst (Video)

Cyrus Malachi and Billy Bromstone deliver the raw ingredients over Jon Phonics' mardy and stomping beat. This is off of Phonics' Half Past Calm 2, available as a digital download or limited-edition shrink-rapped CD at Young N Restless.

Professor Green - Jungle feat. Maverick Sabre (Video)

Pro Green, the UK-battle-champion-turned-bonafide-pop-star, goes on a wobbly dubstep number to represent his stomping ground of Hackney on Jungle. Maverick Sabre is definitely a talented young man (20 years) and I'm interested to see how he'll be involved in the music scene here in the future.

There's also an unexpected MF Doom cameo around the 2:35 mark...

As much influenced by dance music and indie-pop as it is hip hop, Alive Till I'm Dead is worth a listen. God forbid, you might even like it.

P Diddy - Hello Good Morning (Skepta Remix) (Video)

When I heard about this previously, the cynic in me just thought it was hot air. I didn't 1) realise it got made (a couple of months ago) and 2) think they'd put together a video for it. Seeing the man behind Biggie Smalls, and everything else in the years since then, bopping about with Boy Better Know's Skepta is just...odd. Impossibly, Diddy actually sounds even worse over grime, but this is harder than the original, so props to BBK.

Does Chipmunk's mummy know he's started drinking vodka? And straight from the bottle - unhygienic.

Krate Krusaders & Genesis Elijah - Doing My Damn Thing (Video)

Krate Krusaders done nice on this, laying down heavy boom bap for Genesis to spit his signature growl on. Plus you got a catchy hook and slick-looking video to boot.

Off the production outfit's forthcoming album.

Don't Stay In...

Not only can you cop and flog records to your heart's desire at upcoming Vinyl Exchange, you can also buy TY's tat that he no longer wants and enjoy some live performances. And all for a £3 entry fee.

What they're saying:

This month we have the regulars of Evil Ed, DJ’s, Rarekind Records and Jon Phonics bringing their crates down alongside big dada emcee/producer/legend/destroyer of stages TY and crafter of classics the producer and soundman DOLO, former member of everyone’s top 3 hip-hop group from these shores the champions of nature. To end the day we have a line up of Konny Kon, Cyrus Malachi, and Chima Anya performing with Jon Phonics doing a special beat showcase set during the day."

Hey!Zeus - Annunaki Ninja Trials

Hey!Zeus, one half of Obba Supa, gets his psychedelia on with Annunaki Ninja Trials. Radimo is on the assist with the flute and I'm told this cration is best listened to "in a caravan of spaceships surronded by opium smoking draconian snake women to set the mood". That's me already though.

Don't Stay In...

The UK's Rhyme Asylum and Matt Maddox from the States are headlining @ The Rhythm Factory in Whitechapel on November 15th. I have it on good faith that there will be laughing gas, as well as the more traditional inebriate. No, not meow meow, booze.

Check Facebook and Ticketweb for the ins and outs.

Paul White - And Nico b/w Goes To Hollywood & Evil Lives (Remix)

Oddball producer Paul White is back with a highly limited 7" release of And Nico b/w Goes To Hollywood, the latter of which samples none other than Frankie Goes To Hollywood. By the time this is posted, his loyal, salivating fanbase will have picked up all copies, no doubt. Don't fret as you can download here instead at your own price.

And he's just remixed a track for a new artist Diplo is working with - Bosco Delrey. Check that reworking here.

Sway - Outkast feat. Wretch 32

If you caught Sway's The Delivery 2 mixtape, then you'll have heard a snippet of the Wretch 32-featuring Outkast. Here it is in its entirety.

Sway - Outkast feat. Wretch-32

Wizard - Chill Pill 2 (Beat Tape)

Wizard's become a familiar name, shotting his beats out to a who's who list. This time round he compiles a load of his work in the form of Chill Pill 2 - some of which you may recognise and some you won't.

If you've got a heart, he's selling it for a quid; if you haven't, here's a freebie link.

Don't Stay In...

Two reasons to get your arse up off the sofa and have a good time with other people, instead of watching Cowell pan fame-hungry wannabes...or whatever it is you'd otherwise be doing.

Rewd Adams - Suttin To Prove (Video)

UK rap comes into its own when it does double-time. Another one from Skandal under his new Rewd Adams moniker. This will be featured on his Hunger Pains Vol.2 mixtape, the follow-up to last year's DJ MK-mixed tape.
